About Basecamp

Basecamp is the project management and team collaboration application of 37signals, a Chicago software company. The product keeps the work of a project in one place: to-do lists, message boards, scheduling for deadlines and milestones, docs and files, group chat and direct messages, card tables (the company's kanban board), reports, automatic check-ins and time tracking. It is aimed at freelancers, studios, start-ups and small businesses, and larger teams use it as well. The free plan covers one project; paid packages add more projects, storage and support at fixed monthly prices that do not rise with the number of users.

37signals was founded in 1999 as a web design company by Jason Fried, Carlos Segura and Ernest Kim, and moved into web application development in 2004, the year the first Basecamp product launched. The company was renamed Basecamp in 2014 and refocused on that single product, then reverted to the 37signals name in May 2022. Its pricing site says it has run a profitable, debt-free business for 27 years and is privately held without outside venture funding, and Wikipedia records that Jeff Bezos took a minority stake through Bezos Expeditions in 2006.

Ruby on Rails, the web application framework used by many projects, was extracted from the work on Basecamp and released as open source in 2004. Besides Basecamp, 37signals publishes the HEY email service, the Fizzy kanban project tool and Campfire team chat, and it has moved parts of its infrastructure off public cloud hosting.
