About Metabase

Metabase makes open source business intelligence software. It connects to a company's databases and data warehouses and lets people ask questions in plain language or build queries visually, then shares the results as dashboards, documents and scheduled email reports. It is written in Clojure and Python, installs with a single command, and the open source edition is published under the AGPL license on GitHub, where the repository has around 49,600 stars.

The company was founded in 2014 as a spinout from the startup studio Expa and is based in San Francisco, where it keeps a downtown office and describes itself as small and engineering-led. It has raised venture funding, including a Series A led by NEA in 2019. It says more than 100,000 companies and teams use Metabase, naming Hugging Face, McDonald's, Capital One, Mistral AI, Linear, Deutsche Telekom and Kong.

Around the open source edition the company sells Metabase Cloud, paid Pro and Enterprise plans, an embedded analytics SDK for putting dashboards inside other products, Metabot, its AI assistant for asking questions of data, Data Studio for curating a governed semantic layer of tables and metrics, and professional services. It publishes SOC 1 and SOC 2 reports together with GDPR and CCPA certifications.
