About Bitwarden

Bitwarden, Inc. develops open source software for storing passwords, secrets and passkeys. It is used both by individuals on a free personal plan and by organisations that keep a shared credential vault for employees, contractors and developers. The company was founded in 2016 and is headquartered in Santa Barbara, California; Bitwarden, Inc. is the parent company of 8bit Solutions LLC.

The range covers a password manager for consumers and business teams, a secrets manager for developer and DevOps teams, and Passwordless.dev, a component for building FIDO2 WebAuthn authentication into websites and applications. An authenticator app and an encrypted file-sharing feature called Bitwarden Send sit alongside them. Data is encrypted on the user's device before it is sent, so the servers only ever hold encrypted data.

Bitwarden says it serves more than 80,000 businesses and over 15 million users across more than 180 countries and 50-plus languages. Alongside the hosted service, the company publishes the client and server code openly and offers self-hosting for organisations that want the vault on infrastructure they control.
