About Nextcloud

Nextcloud GmbH develops an open source platform for file sync and sharing, chat, video conferencing, groupware and collaborative document editing. It was founded in June 2016 by a group of open source entrepreneurs and engineers. Everything it publishes is open source, and the company states that it does not use an open-core model or proprietary extensions.

The company is headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, with a main office in Berlin and a second office in Stuttgart. It employed around 100 people at the end of 2023 and said in 2024 that the team was spread across 25 countries, working remotely or from those two offices. In 2025 it pledged to invest €250 million in digital sovereignty by 2030 and held its first Digital Sovereignty summit.

Its products are grouped under Nextcloud Hub, a combined workspace: Nextcloud Files for sync and share, Nextcloud Talk for chat, calls and video, Nextcloud Groupware for calendar, contacts and mail, Nextcloud Office for real-time document editing using Collabora Online or Thinkfree Office, Nextcloud Assistant for a private and local AI assistant, and Nextcloud Flow for workflow automation. It also maintains the Roundcube webmail project, which joined the company in 2023. Customers listed include Deutsche Telekom, the Austrian federal ministry for economy and labour, Amnesty International and universities such as TU Berlin.
