About Slack

Slack is a messaging platform that organises team communication into channels and also offers direct messaging, audio and video huddles, shared documents called Canvas, project lists and a workflow builder. Slack AI adds thread and channel summaries, search across people and files, meeting notes and translation, and the Slack Marketplace lists more than 2,600 apps that connect the platform to other services.

The product is sold in Free, Pro, Business+ and Enterprise+ plans and runs in a browser plus desktop apps for macOS, Windows and Linux and mobile apps for iOS and Android. Slack Connect extends shared channels to other companies, and its product page says more than 350,000 organisations use it to work with partners and customers.

The company was founded in 2009 in Vancouver as Tiny Speck, was renamed Slack Technologies in 2014 and has its headquarters in Salesforce Tower in San Francisco. Salesforce completed its acquisition of Slack in July 2021 after announcing the $27.7 billion deal in December 2020. Slack reports 200,000 or more paid customers, says 77 of the Fortune 100 use the product and has daily active users in more than 150 countries.
